Tauranga Te Papa Rotary and HealthQuarters launch a new 12-week recovery programme
A new partnership between Tauranga Te Papa Rotary and HealthQuarters is giving men in Tauranga a practical and supportive way to rebuild strength, confidence and connection after cancer.
The 12-week pilot programme has been developed for men who are currently undergoing cancer treatment, are in remission, or are recovering from cancer. It combines professionally guided exercise with wellbeing, encouragement and the opportunity to connect with others who understand the challenges of the cancer journey.
More than physical recovery
Cancer recovery is about more than regaining physical strength. For many men, the period during and after treatment can also bring uncertainty, loss of confidence and a sense of isolation. The programme is designed to provide a safe, welcoming environment where participants can work at a level appropriate to their individual needs while building confidence and social connection.
“Recovering from cancer is about much more than physical healing. Many men struggle quietly after treatment. This programme is about helping them regain confidence, improve their health and realise they are not facing recovery alone.”
— Jenny Robertson, Tauranga Te Papa Rotary
A programme built around individual needs
Sessions will be held weekly in small groups at HealthQuarters in Tauranga. Each participant will complete an initial assessment so that the programme can be tailored to their individual needs and abilities.
The sessions combine evidence-based exercise with encouragement, accountability and friendship. HealthQuarters director Diego Rosenberg says that regular movement can play an important role in recovery, while a supportive group environment can be just as valuable.
“Regular movement can play a significant role in recovery, but equally important is creating a place where men feel comfortable, supported and understood.”
— Diego Rosenberg, HealthQuarters
Making the programme accessible
Tauranga Te Papa Rotary is subsidising the first intake, bringing the cost for participants down to just $5 per session. The first intake is planned to begin in September 2026.
A model for the future
The Tauranga pilot has the potential to become a model that can be replicated by Rotary clubs and community partners throughout New Zealand. If successful, the programme could help extend the benefits of structured exercise, wellbeing and peer connection to many more men recovering from cancer.
Could you help spread the word?
Tauranga Te Papa Rotary and HealthQuarters are encouraging community organisations, health professionals and others who work with men affected by cancer to share information about the programme with anyone who may benefit.
